WEDDING speeches

What should I say at a wedding?

You're the best man. You've been asked to give a speech. What do you say? In this session, we will cover all you need to know in order to give a great presentation.

A wedding speech is also called a 'toast'. It is short. You should prepare it, in writing, before you speak. You should definitely rehearse it before you give it.

There are 3 parts to a great wedding speech:

Beginning

  • Thank the groom for the opportunity to express how happy you are to congratulate the couple on their special day.

Middle

  • Explain how you met the groom.

  • Describe how you got to know him better . . . and learned his good characteristics (and bad features - optional but always light-hearted).

  • Select what you feel is the groom's best characteristic.

  • Give an example that illustrates the groom’s best characteristic. The one that you love about him (eg always punctual, remembers birthdays, loves food).

End

  • Explain how this makes him a great husband for his bride.

  • Ask the guests to toast the bride and groom and wish them a happy life together.

Conclusion

I hope this session on how to write a great wedding speech has been useful. We have covered the atmosphere that you want to create at the reception, the structure of a brilliant speech and how to end your talk gracefully. Every success.
