What shall I write about?

What Shall I write about?

Imagine the scene. You've been asked to give a talk to an audience. The first reaction may be "Aggghhh". Then you settle down and start.

Topic or Emotion?

While you are thinking of a topic, there is something going on behind the scenes. You may not realise it, but it is happening. Have a listen to these people, and see if these were the thoughts that went through your mind.

They identified their first thoughts when asked to give a speech. These included:

  • important

  • personal

  • fun

  • interesting

  • passionate about

  • love

Their first thought wasn't the topic of the speech. It was their emotional reaction to the topic. They wanted to talk about something that mattered to them. It was only when they thought of topics that got them enthusiastic that they began listing topics.

What topics do I feel enthusiastic about?

Brainstorming. Listing as many topics that you are interested in. For some, this can be easy.

What happens if I can't think of any ideas?

Have a look at this list:

If that's not enough, have a look at the "Non-fiction" books on Amazon. There are hundreds of titles that can spark the creative juices.

There's a website called "Udemy". This lists courses that people are interested in. Look through the different categories and see if that helps.

Conclusion

In this Blog, you have looked at a major element in giving a great speech: "What shall I talk about?".

What you actually mean is "What topics am I interested in. Passionate enough about to research. And prepare and deliver a speech."

When you really want to talk about a topic, you will create a brilliant speech. And get the applause you deserve.

Find the topic that you really love and let's get started.
